[100+Rules]Isomerism in coordination compounds
What is isomerism?
Compound having the same moleculer formula but different but have different physical and chemical properties is called isomers and the phenomenon is known as isomerism.
Isomerism |
In coordination compounds this isomerism is due to the relative arrangement of atoms or groups in space .
On this basis , the isomerism among the coordination compounds is mainly of two types.
There are two kinds of isomerism.
1) Structural isomerism or constitutional isomerism
Structural isomerism have different IUPAC name and different in connectivity between the atoms in the molecule.2) Stereo isomerism
Stereo isomerism have same IUPAC name and different in attachment of atoms or groups in space[but connectivity between atoms are same].
Types of Structural isomerism or constitutional isomerism
A)
Differ in main chain or side chain of carbon keeping same chemical reaction.Chain Isomerism
In case of chain isomerism, two isomers differ due to change in
the mother (main) chain name. They have the same class.
Example : CH3—CH2—CH2—CH3 Butane.
CH3—CH—CH3,

2 – Methyl propane
Example : (a) C—C—C—C—C—C
(b) C—C—C—C—C—C
|
C
are not chain isomerse because mother chain is same.
(d)
Example :
are not chain isomers
because they have the
same mother chain.
B) Position Isomerism

C) Metamerism
In this, functional group is always in the middle and the two isomers are differ due to change in the alkyl group.
It is a special type of functional isomerism in which functional
D) Tautomerism
groups are always in dynamic equilibrium. It is of 2-types.
Keto-enol and non keto-enol
Keto-enol : In case of Keto-enol tautomerism, a keto group with
α-hydrogen converts into enolic form in the presence of acid or
base.
Isomerism |
Non Keto-enol Tautomerism
In this case, in the presence of the given medium, acidic or basic, one form changes into another.
